How to find an Underground Water Leak?

Go ahead and take time out and help give yousome insight and some helpful tips on what you cando and what you should do to find those hiddenunderground leaks on a large property. Here we stand on a five acre property with sprinklerlines that actually go past this Orchard, down the Hill, around the Clay court, all the way down the Hilland then to the back of the house. But while we’re here, let’s goahead and stop at the meter.I’m going to go ahead and give you a few thingsto look at first before you start the water leak detection.I want to go over the meter. If you look at this water meter here,it’s actually a digital style water meter. Okay. And this actually helped the client because a lot ofthe cities now are going with this digital meter. So two benefits, they’re going with a digitalmeter, which sometimes not all the time. The city will actually give you a notification thatyou’ve got a water leak on your property. The second advantage of having a digital meter is nowthe city is billing monthly versus every two months. So that does help identify if you do have ahigh water bill, you’re able to catch it within thatfirst month versus letting the second month go. Okay. So, again, identify what type of meterthat you have if you need to.If you feel like you have a leak and you haven’tbeen contacted, you can always reach out to your Department ofwater and power, have them come out and confirm, in fact,if you do have a leak or not. All right. So after you’ve identified the water meter, the second thingwe need to find out is what type of materialdo you have in your home and the sprinkler system? So right here, what we’ve discoveredis that especially with large properties, this is called PVC polyvinyl chloride. It’s Schedule 40 PVC pipe. Now, the issue with schedule 40 PVC pipeis that it is a non conductive material. So it does make it morechallenging to trace out the lines. So really, you have to relyon acoustic pumping up the system. So with that being said, what we did in thisparticular situation was once we determined that we could notfind the leak, then we went ahead and cut thepipe, as you can see down here again. And what we’ve done is we’ve disconnectedit from the water meter and wetemporarily install the PEX waterline. And as you can see, we just ran iton the top surface of the driveway here allthe way to where it meets the house. What this does is it allows usto get water back on the house.A lot of family members here,so they really wanted that water. So we’re able to do that once weconnect the water back to the home. Now, we’re able to take a step back andfocus and mapping out the water system to thehome and focus on pinpointing that leak. We’re going to go ahead and I want to take youright back to that PVC line again and show you oneother little step that’s very helpful in determining a lead.Come on over here. All right, folks, so now that we went over gettingthe house back with water by cutting this water mainright here, what we did is we ended up installinga micro camera down this two inch line. Now, the benefit with that is that nowwe’re able to run that camera head down. Now, with the location of the trip, we’re able tolocate and map out exactly where this water main goes. Now, this particular water main we traced out comes likethis camera had stopped right here at this point. So from here to there, we were able to identifythat this entire line right here was in perfect shape. So then once we determined this, we removedthe camera and we went ahead and startedto the back of the property. All right, folks, before we continue the back whilewe’re here, I wanted to go ahead and showyou how we made this very simple connection. We didn’t have to cut any copper pipes. We simply removed the relief valve andthen made a quick connection here. The other great benefit is we like to use PEX piping. It comes in 100 foot rolls. It’s relatively inexpensive. But the great thing with PEXpiping is it can be reused. So a good plumbing contractor that is certified inPEX should be able to pull it off thejob and reuse it, Saving you that extra costin piping that you’re never going to use.So anyhow, keep that in mind.Let’s go ahead and I’ll meet you in the back. All right, folks, so now that we’ve got the houseback on and everything up and running, now we haveaccess to do what we need to do, Utilizing allthe latest technology to pinpoint exactly where the leak is.So after using our air tanks and safe gas andacoustic equipment, we were able to locate the leak righthere, which was a 90, ten inches below ground.Folks, can you imagine now, why didn’t this resurface?Well, the reason why is becausethe water was shooting this way.And look at this water was traveling underneath thisdeck here in the backyard, so it didn’t subsurface.Well, hopefully this gave you some insight on how tofind those leaks on a large piece of property.
